I agree with Godfried that the guide by Fabricius and Alderslade is a good starting point. However,it stays at genus level ( which is probably very wise) and would not help for positive identification at species level. It is a good idea to get familiarised wih the anatomy of the soft corals and in this respect I recommend : Bayer FM, Grashoff M & Verseveldt J 1983 Illustrated trilingual glossary of morphological and anatomical terms applied to Octocorallia. EJ Brill, Leiden, 75 pp..

Bayer et al, 1983 is the best in order to understand the anatomy terms you need to know for identification. In this website you can also found some important references and a key to the families of octocorals: http://researcharchive.calacademy.org/research/izg/OCTOFAM.htm After that, focus on the location and depth of your soft corals in order to look for taxonomic literature. Leading authorities on taxonomy of octocorals are Bayer, Grasshoff, van Ofwegen, Cairns, Watling, Alderslade, López Gonzalez and Altuna. If you look for their papers you will find most of the descriptions or reference to the old ones (some available only on Biodiversity Heritage LIbrary). I have experience with the species of the Azores islands. If you want I can help in some extent. Good luck!
