Currently, formal mechanisms for accreditation of Higher Education studies, both formal and informal, are mostly geographically located. Given the up-rise of online learning, could blockchain be the technological solution for a global system of accreditation? Any thoughts?

I definitely see potential in this technology for including it in a broader global higher education system that will allow learners worldwide to have official records of their formal and informal education.

I'm afraid, I am not so optimistic. The problem of global accreditation system is multidimensional, and I agree, this technology is a tool which will help to secure, distributed sharing of information, but I can't see how much it will contribute to solve divergences in interpretation among specialists, what is good and what is not, which kind of measures has to be done, which kind of scales should be used, and many other questions, not dealt in any way with those tools and procedures.

Thanks for your insight. I agree, this problem is multidimensional and really complex. Also, as you point out, technology is always just an enabler but a successful implementation goes beyond the technological tool.

In my view, new communication technologies are challenging social structures and practices in ways that are far beyond our current comprehension. It is clear that local communities and societies are currently facing issues that are global (one of them is educational systems). Local educational system are not any longer responding to the needs of educating global citizens, just to mention one aspect. Consequently, what I see (not an experts opinion) is that alternative, open educational modes (online independent programs, MOOCs, learning communities etc) are affording educational experiences that are challenging the existing traditional educational institutions and programs. This opens up many possibilities ways of thinking about global educational systems.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. Yes, it is a fact that an evolution is going on at a global level in education and other areas of human activities. I think the challenge is figure out how technology (and which specific technologies) can be of use to solve at least some of the issues that you bring to attention.
