Dimethyloctadecyl[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ammonium chloride is commercially available but I want to synthesis in lab.
I would start whichever the cheapest amine and corresponding aldehyde do reductive amination reaction then salt out with Methyl chloride.
I drew up a scheme for you starting with Stearic acid which is very cheap. Reduce it to alcohol, then oxidize back up to aldehyde. Attack with dimethylamine and do reductive elimination to get your amine. Then reflux with your organosilane and precipitate out with ether.
Attached is scheme. All compounds are available on Sigma Aldrich and are cheap.
Also, if you start with methyl stearate (methyl ester of stearic acid) and you reduce it with DIBAL-H you could get to the aldehyde in one step. It is also a cheap starting material. So your synthesis can be 3 steps.
