For appropriate testing of hypotheses that measure the relationship between two or more independent variables and a dependent variable, you can use regression analysis.

To do this, you need to use more powerful statistical soft wares such as EViews or SPSS and Stata.

My suggestion is EViews. If you are not familiar with this software, you may get acquainted with how to use this software on YouTube. If you are interested, you will find out how to use it at more advanced levels.

I suggest you use the SPSS binary logistic regression. Where there will be a dependent variable and several explanatory variables.

To study the relationship within your variables, you need to run one or more regressions. To run a regression, you need to identify the dependent variable and all the independent variables that affect this dependent varibale. For example, you want to see how the firm performance is affected by the size of the firm, the Board effectiveness, and the CEO duality. So, your dependent variable should be "Firm Performance" which should be regressed over the independent variables which are (1) Firm Size, (2) Board Effectiveness, and (3) CEO Duality. You can run regressions using Microsoft Excel which gives excellent results.

After figuring out the hypothesis part next you have to ensure that your variables are defined. After defining the variables you have to ensure that you have dependent and independent variables on which you can perform multiple regression analysis or ordinary least square regression. You can perform your analysis on software's like E views, strata and SPSS. For example as you have stated above you can take firm performance as an dependent variable and firm size, board duality and board effectiveness as an independent variable. Then you can run OLS regression to measure there postive and negative statistical significance. As numerous studies have done an OLS regression so you ought to get support of previous findings to validate your results.

My suggestion is that you have to consider different parameters in terms of which you want to measure firm performance just like ceo duality, board effectiveness, etc., that you have considered in case of coporate governance. And then constuct regression lines of your choice variables of dependant and independent nature. Then you can make use of Eviews software to analyse the regression of dependant variable (Firm Performance in your study) on independent variable (Effectiveness of Corporate Governance in your study). Finally test the hypothesis whether your outcome fits into it or not. Please make sure whether Firm Size is Independent variable or control variable. I think it is control variable.

am I allowed to use any variables to test my study? like CEO duality, board size, number of independent directors, etc. Also, if I measure it against firm performance, does that mean ROA? I am trying to get all my data into Bloomberg in order to put into stata or Eviews. Must I not include ROA into those variables? Only the few I mentioned above? if so, then how do I measure it against firm performance once I have my results?

Hi You may use all of these variables but each in a separate equation. It is recommended to use more than one variable to get robust results. Even you may build a separate hypothesis for each variable. Similarly, you may use ROA, ROE, net margin, etc It is better to use more than on performance variables in separate equations for robustness.

Simple regression through excel can be done, but some classical assumption test is better through the SPSS application.

I agree with Zahra Lashgari and suggest to read few good papers in the area of corporate governance and how the variables were idetified and defined as dependant or independent.

Usually a pooled OLS is adequate for a simple master thesis. If you hav downloaded the data variables,short them in a panel form just run the regression. You can fnd tutorials in youtube.

Now if your question is about how to find the variables you need:

1)google scholar search with the keywords "Corporate governance and firm performance". you will find plenty of papers that examine this relationship.

2)write down the variables they employ(what are the independent,the control variables, how they measure it etc.)

3)use the same variables in your sample

Better to consider governance variables like number of BODs, Number of women in the board, Board competency, Duality of board, board ownership and others. Firm size and other variables may be included as control variable. Financial performance can be measured using measurements mentioned above by others

You can use likert to convert qualitative materials into quantitative and also financial and efficiency ratios. one suggestion that you can use updated software rather than excel

Corporate Governance can be measured in two approaches. One is equilibrium variable model that is using certain variables as independent variables(Board Independence, Board Size, etc) .
