Copyright for maps in journal articles?

In an upcoming journal article I want to illustrate the topic by using a simple geographical map containing areas of wood, lakes, settlements...

Is there a way of using/modifying existing maps? This seems to be quite an issue, because as an author you have to at least share the copyright with the publisher of the journal.
