I need to convert 1,2-dichloralkane to alaknediol using reflux condenser. The dichloroalkane is insoluble in water. Hence i need to take methanol/ethanol as solvent. For substitution reaction i need to dissolve an alkali in water.

Boiling point of methanol, 1,2-dichloroalkane, water are 64.7, 84 and 100 degree respectively. So, at what temperature i should reflux. The higher tempeature will lead to elimination reaction.

Does it require any catalyst?
