What may be the curriculum on disaster risk management in an management (MBA) programme? looking to latest developments in area of DRR and CCA. I am working on proposing a specialization/elective course on disaster management in the business/management schools, and am looking for inputs, examples, ideas. How does it balance between disaster risk reduction/resilience and emergency management, and incorporate public policy, community and sustainable development issues, from business/management point of view. I would be highly grateful for the inputs.

Business and management students are aware of risk in their business which is taught. Concept of risk, vulnerability and hazards should be taught to them in terms of disasters. How disaster can destroy their business and management of any company. All companies and organizations must be safe first to grow. Whole curriculum of disaster management for any group can be reframed to the need of managers. They are important stake holders. These managers should be aware of all types of disaster which can affect their organizations. Curriculum must be more of sensitizing rather than making them expert. But expert in disaster management is required for industries, factory, company, projects., which all managers should understand.

I agree on the sensitizing issue. I think it is important to make students realize the complexity of organizational activities and their environment and what this complexity implies regarding disaster prevention, especially in terms of uncertainty and ambiguity. It also helps identify actors and their interrelations, both useful for prevention and emergency planning. I am currently involved in an MBA course in risk management. We use complex case analysis such as Fukushima that I recently published, or Bhopal (Anatomy of a crisis) from Paul Shrivastava. He also published interesting articles such as “Ecocentric management for a risk society” that can perhaps be of interest for you. I think a focus on ethics and the place of ethics in risk management is also essential.
