Yes the wild animal trading should be curtailed and stopped. The world is going vegan. I think every living thing has a right to live and we humans already have so much of options for eating in the form of fruits and vegetables. So one life should not be sacrificed just for our taste buds, until and unless it is explicitly mandatory for survival.

I think fruits and vegetables also have lives! Creation has made some animals carnivores and others omnivores while others are herbivores as a fact of survival and to balance the ecosystem. We as humans need to strike a balance between our meaningful survival and a maintaining the ecosystem equilibrium. If humans stop feeding on wild animals and indeed animals generally, there will still diseases including epidemics? May be our mode of preparation of animals and products for consumption should be moderated to limit transmission of zoonoses.

I think it is a lesson to shift from non-vegetarian to vegetarian diet, because latter is considered good for health.

If we can go for fully vegetarian a diet with all nutrition, it is very good, and the most of Buddhist and Hindu communities are enjoy with that.

However it is not possible worldwide. Therefore, we have to go for non-vegetarian food too. But the problem is we are consuming non-vegetarian food (meet and egg etc.) coming from Wild Animal (WA), and this could be the root cause for the cases like new corona virus. Specially, contact with live WA and diets with half-boiled / uncooked tissues (of WA) are serious problems.

If we can use non-vegetarian food (meet and other food products) coming from livestock farming, we can control this type of issues to some extent. Bu it is not possible for food of WA.

Therefore, rules and regulations are essential to control Wild Animal Trading (WAT) for food and use them as pest domestically.

Stopping the consumption of animals and animal products is not the best way forward, as it will undermine food and nutrition security. However, maintaining proper hygiene and adequate preparations to remove all potential toxic components of the animal products before consumption is key.

Vegetarians should take supplements of some nutrients, especially vitamin B12 (cobalamins), which are notably lacking in plants, but abundant in animal products. The guidance of a medical practitioner, nutritionist, or dietician is required.

In some parts of the world, especially in rural areas and developing/underdeveloped regions, consumption of games (wild animals used as food) is a major source of animal protein and diets.

Both small games (such as squirrel, rabbits, pheasants, geese or ducks, etc.) and large games (such as antelope, deer, moose, wild dogs, bear, etc.) have served as major source of nutrition.

Although the source of the COVID-19 is currently inconclusive, I think that consumption of wild animals should still be prohibited. First, there has been prove that some types of wild animal can transmit diseases to human such as ebola virus, avian flu and MERS. Although various zoonotic diseases limited themselves to animal-human transmission, who knows when will these diseases mutate? Second, as seen from footages of many wild animal markets, animals are treated cruelly. Thus, avoiding wild animal consumption can reduce these cruelties. Third, some wild animals, such as pangolins, black bears, elephants and tigers, are endangered species and consumptions of these animals’ meat and products are considered illegal and environmentally harmful. Thus, it is best to avoid.

Most of published recommendation I am reading are related to the ban of wild meat consumption. These proposals neglects the cultural aspects and the well-being outcomes associated to subsistence hunting, and do not take into account the importance of hunting on protein provision in disenfranchised communities for example. This could be understood as a colonialist recommendation with a high probability to be ineffective in tropical developing countries. We need to find some balance between wildlife consumption regulation and the rights of traditional people. We are in a tricky moment, where it is very easy to let the rope break on the weaker side. Conservation amd decision makers should include local leaders and indigenous people in this discussion to increase the legitimacy of any recommendation.

If indigenous or rural people depend on natural resources in a forest or a rural area, and they do not have significant contact with public/urban human population, it is important to provide a legal framework to protect their right to use wild animals for their consummation within the forest/rural community.

However, on such occasions, it is important to improve the method of hunting and way of food preparation to mitigate the virus/pathogen transmission within those indigenous communities, and those rules and regulations should be controlled by local authorities.

Most people have confused two important aspects of wildlife trade and consumption: the health issue and the environmental issue. Wildlife meat can be obtained in a sustainable manner and with minimal health conditions, if we work to develop systems to manage the wildlife in a legal and sustainable way and if governments have the means to monitor and regulate this use. Prohibiting consumption or trade will only strengthen illegal trade and poaching, making it difficult to monitor and regulate these activities. Wildlife is very important for isolated human populations and to consider banning their use is to condemn these populations and indirectly the environment they share with the fauna.
