Currently I am designing a building (width=35 m) over 2 layers of very compressible soils with 35 and 10 m thick and Cc arround 5. Below them is a very stiff soil.
I decided to improve those layers with rigid inclusions, but I do not know how can I introduce the influence of the rigid inclussions into the consolidation (settlement) analysis.
Can anybody help me with this?
Note: Maybe the obvious solution could be to have a deep foundation to the stiff layef, but it is not feasible beccause of a regional settlement could cause an apparent emersion.
Jose, I spent the last two years on the NAICM airport with Parsons, including reviewing the field tests of about 10 different methods for improving the soil for the runway and tower loads. We did a test with and without inclusions. In every case, the installation of inclusions (concrete piles in predrilled holes) disturbed the soil and increased its compressibility by disturbing the e-log-p curve. See attached pptx file. Basically, you nearly doubled the settlement with some benefit of upper layer rigidity, but it was hard to tell.
