This would be a large and labour-intensive effort of transcribing and interlinking published literature references. I am thinking that this has characteristics similar to genealogical records, and might be amenable to a similar software application. Alternatively, a purely relational database approach might be more appropriate.
Although I am a learner myself but the idea sounds interesting.
Fortunately, yesterday I was thinking that how to retrieve (automatically) the list of references(articles) cited in an article. Most of the articles are in PDF format and since its a binary format you need to use some library in order to get the list of references in a process-able format.
For instance, in an article, suppose 30 papers are being referred and you find 5 papers relevant to your area, than Instead of copying/pasting and organizing them for your dissertation/thesis wastes a lot of time. Moreover, if you want to locate the intersection of articles among 10-articles ?
Some form of automation to generate dependency graph among the literature can really help to pinpoint more research issues and easily explore the area.
