Dear all,

Recently I was reading an article related to soft soil improvement by encased stone columns, subjected to lateral loading by means of shear tests. They mention that there is an increase in shear strength of the reinforced soft soil  due to encased granular columns described by the "apparent cohesion"  due to the effects of the geosynthetic confinement.

In the literature I currently find that this concept of  is more related to variably saturated media in which capilartly forces cause "apparent chohesion".

So I would like to clarify if does it apply for both cases.

Best regards,
