I've been reading some old (40's-50's) biochemistry papers and I've come across the same concentration annotation numerous times - "M/a number" e.g. M/15 phosphate buffer. What does that mean? 1M divided by 15, which would make it 67mM? Does anyone know?
This means that your phosphate concentration is M/a or like your example M/15=67mM. These buffers are prepared by mixing the monobasic and the dibasic phosphate in the right conditions, for M/15 this would be like here: http://www.ilri.cgiar.org/InfoServ/Webpub/fulldocs/LivProd/chapter10.htm

Indeed, "M" stands for "molar", and M/15 is a shorthand notation for 1/15 molar buffer.
