Should I take the compliance of the direct shear apparatus into consideration as a correction to the horizontal displacements? If yes, how can this done practically?
I think it a deficiencies of direct shear test. If you want calculate the friction angle , you dont need any correction.
But if you want to stress-displacement curve, just correct area based on applied horizontal displacement.
