I am writing an essay to study the diversity in nasopharyngeal microbiota of different samples. I have studied the alpha diversity of the samples using the Shannon index, Chao1 index and Inverse Simpson index. I am aware that the Shannon Index is mostly used in this studies but I am unable to find an explanation as to why is this the case. Could anyone explain (with a bit of references to use) the differences of these indexes and why is the Shannon index the most common?

The Shannon index (H) is a well-known diversity index used in microecological studies. Because it's simple. The higher the value of H, the higher the diversity of species in a particular community. The lower the value of H, the lower the diversity :)
