Consider a high carbon-high chromium wear resistant steel. Two types of heat treatment can be done. (1) Quench and single-temper; (2) Normalize and temper. In the same hardness value (e.g. 30 HRC), which ones give the better impact properties? what is the role of retained austenite in quench and tempered condition, if not remove after single tempering?
