Incidences of landslides and cloud burst have increased over time in Uttarakhand. Population explosion and factors related are known to be the major causal factors. How are mitigation strategies going to help in the coming future or the incidences will be more prevalent in the coming time?
Uncertainity about climate coupled with uneven rains is common not only in Uttarakhand alone , but its on a global scale. And , need to be dealt through mega scale combative strategies, involving other states as well...
Landslides and cloud burst events increased due to Climate change. Consequently disasters are increased because of haphazard used of natural resources.
First I think it is better to investigate the current precautions with mitigation strategies and their effects. Then we can have an idea of how the mitigation strategies minimize the current influence. Then can predict the future. Hence need more scientific investigations in this regard for a detailed and correct picture.
I would be interested in seeing some graphs comparing precipitation patterns in Uttarakhand over the past decade (2011 to 2020?) to the preceding two decades (1991-2000 and 2001 to 2010). It would help us to better understand the phenomena that you have briefly described above.
Regular inspections by geologists, improvement to drainage system and revegetation may help. Building houses around steep slopes should be avoided. Past landslide areas should be sign-posted.
