Which method is better to have an acid activated clay? Heating the clay in a solution of sulfuric acid or using a solution of sulfuric acid/nitric acid?
As an alternative method, you may consult my articel in "Applied Clay Science 42 (2008) 201–205, Removal of Zn, Cd, and Pb Ions from water by Sarooj clay"
This methods can be destroy your silicate structure. Pillared clays (in the case of smectites) have exposed the acid site so an increment on acidity can be achieved.
Be very careful in using treatment with acids. As said by Carlos it can destroy your clay layers. In addition it is very difficult to do this in a consistent and reproducible fashion as the chemically inhomogeneous nature of natural clays will effect how the acid will attack your clay structure.
