It started with territorial governance and spatial planning changes in the Western Balkans, with a special eye on the impact of the EU pre-accession and of other international actors. The focus on China came in later, as it is hard to ignore considering the funding pumped in the region. I would like to understand if the entry on the stage of China means a disallignation of WB countries' spatial strategies and priorites from those suggested (and supported through pre-accession funds) by the EU. In other words, to find evidence of what I hypothise may manifest as a "battle of economic conditionalities" on spatial development priorities. Hope it's not too vague! :)
I think it's pretty important and justified to verify this. In the Turkish case it was quite an interesting shift over time in planning of regional policy (it was not the Chinese impact there but still). Ebru Ertugal wrote an interesting piece on these changes. I'm curious what the results of your findings will be :) And good luck!
There was an interesting article in NRC Handelsblad - a leading Dutch newspaper. It was not about TG, but about Chinese investments having an impact on TG. In short: China invests in infrastructure - and countries cannot pay back the loans. The property, or a 99 year right, then goes to China. This happened in Sri Lanka (a whole harbour is now Chinese), and is likely to happen in African countries. China is not in TG, but in getting critical infrastructure, and that has an impact on TG. And China makes long term investments - and waits for 10-20 years. It would be interesting to check out the details of the loan documents. regards
