China’s “Double Reduction” Policy: A Shift Toward Student Well-Being

In 2021, China introduced the Double Reduction Policy to cut down on excessive homework and private tutoring for primary and middle school students (Ministry of Education, 2021). Early research shows reduced student anxiety and more balanced classroom engagement (Liu & Li, 2022). This bold reform prompts a global question: How can we support academic success without overwhelming students? Education systems everywhere can learn from this approach to balance rigor, equity, and well-being.
