NC is debating allowing fracking; it could be nearby to where I live. There has been discussion of water pollution caused by chemicals used in the solution used for fracturing, but the chemicals are apparently trade secrets. What is the purpose? Anyone know something about them?

as a first start you can consult Wikipedia.
It seems that the most critical point is contamination by hydrocarbons from the deposit. The key question is how good is the overall capture of production water and ground water circulation.

I assume that substances mentioned their like benzene are displaced from the deposit and not originally added.
