Personally I dont see a difference between reading and summarising from google and ChatGPT. But I also think that the author should not be rely on ChatGPT hundred percent. It should be regarded as a tool giving an idea like me. It could be wrong :)

However, we still have to undergo a process of summarizing, synthesizing, paraphrasing and appraising the reading substances.

The source of evidence, I could say, need to be thorough and precise.

ChatGPT generates the texts from different sources, and with wrong citations, the plagiarism is high, and it cannot think like a human in developing arguments and their backup citations. It can help authors, but I agree with Amirul AB that authors should do a lot of work after using the ChatGPT. The reviewers and editors can easily judge the real research paper because it links with the results (qual, qual, or both) and other supporting materials like the ethical approval or original research instruments, photos, etc. that show the process of conducting a study.

If educators and K-12 teachers do not understand this technology, the problem will be severe.Students can easily write their assignments and essays. More advanced assessment methods and skilled teachers are required along with this rapid development of AI tools. No worries about the academic work because the Google algorithms and other tools will be advanced to detect the AI-generated text.

Why not go to: https://chat.openai.com/auth/loginto create a ChatGPT account. Then ask a question from your own research agenda, for example “Write a paper to answer the question if xxx. Look at the ChatGPT answering your question word by word … Once ChatGPT is finished, you will probably see that the narrative is a structured text, quite short, but not a real paper you could submit to a journal. It could be useful though for secondary school children.

With my limited knowledge on AI, this is what I feel as a researcher. ChatGPT and its successor is going to create a tectonic shift in the field of academic writing including scientific writing which may gives rise to multiple possible scenarios. This is going to create a possible situation where journals have to decide whether they are going to accept AI assisted work or only fully human written articles.

It might also give rise to a race between the AI companies developing plagiarism detection tools and the ones developing ChatGPT like tools. We can see the development of more robust plagiarism detection tool which uses AI to detect AI written articles. On the other hand, newer versions of ChatGPT and similar and more robust AI models can possibly beat any plagiarism detection tool currently available. Basically, the plagiarism detection tool companies would have to play the catch up game every time a more capable version ChatGPT emerges.

Ultimately, we might move towards a point of time when AI assisted articles might be recognized legitimate if properly cited, and newer rules by journals, universities and regulators would emerge to address this issue. I think there would be a time when International co-operation among different countries would be required to address this issue and promote ethical use of AI for academic and scientific writing.

OpenAI will use the text watermark in the ChatGPT text. This Watermark will help educators, journals, and any publisher outside of academia easily identify AI text.

The current AI plagiarism detectors such as GPTZero (https://gptzero.me/) and Originality.AI (https://originality.ai/) may not be 100% accurate in detecting GPT3.5 text, but many tools will be developed in the near future with the assistance of OpenAI. So I think OpenAI and other companies will collaborate rather than compete.

Maybe is this an opportunity to see the average paper quality improve. [Oooops ;-)]

Recently I attended a seminar called "Plagiarism in the age of GPT-3...actually GPT-4", and another one entitled "AI in Programming Technologies".

Although their focus was highly centered on version 3.5 of chatGPT, the main outcome I retained was: it is purely contextual.

It is important to have the basic evaluation skills, and insight into what is being addressed to understand whether the information provided makes sense in that context.

I emphasize that this is only valid for the near future, as these technologies are constantly evolving. But I think that, above all, it helps the brainstorming process and not so much to write with the desired scientific rigor.

To answer your question, I think your prediction is correct that it WILL be possible in future to have complete papers authored by AI. I think it is not possible in the present but I expect it will become better and more accurate in the future.
