We might ask how you or I know that we are not AI?
Isn't this what Karel Capek was getting at in the landmark play _R.U.R._? First that AI needn't be the full array of human but only what was needed?
Needed by whom?
Needed by big corporations, of course such as Rossum's Universal Robots, who could get work out of machines more cheaply than out of human beings. So it was not technology driving the change but the capitalist processes.
Then enter stage right the AI (robot) rights advocates. And finally the robots decide all by themselves (beginning of self-awareness) that they have had enough of being exploited.
But--good news--one of them shows human traits to old Alquist the engineer and he decide that AI Adam and AI Eve will be the future Humans 2.1! Happy ending.
Now what was the question again?
Not much new going on from what I see. The next science fiction might be what will be waiting in the wings to replace robots and AI. Possibly sentient biological viruses eating their wiring and transistors? Always extrapolate, never simply react.
