Due to its lower aromatization energy as compared to thiophene, furan is susceptible to side reactions, such as ring opening, during electrochemical polymerization. This leads to shorter conjugated chains with lower conductivity values. That might be one of the main reason why furan is least studied as compared to its close analogues.
