Celtic Knots certainly can be related to "mind wandering" in the sense of diversion from current pressures to allow focus on deep thinking about a particular concern or conundrum. Legend has it (and recent science supports) that repetitive tracing of a Celtic Knot relaxes the mind and allows it to reveal a hidden truth or "big question" (i.e. to achieve a revelation). A comparable device is a pattern of overlapping equilateral triangles whose outline resembles a Star of David. Repetitively tracing the whole pattern has the same effect. In this context both devices serve as ready-made "doodles" and have a similar function. The Ancients knew a lot more neuroscience that we have given them credit. Hope this helps.
