The aim was to have different model paradigms directly available in R, even if there is of course specific CA software that may be faster.

Perhaps you will find interesting this CA-like model: dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.agsy.2013.10.009

The R code of the model is available as a supplementary material.

If you are going to code your own CA, the develpment of the lattice/grid and the updating rules can be interesting; although the insect movement part is a bit rusty (it uses the not-so-recommennded for loops). Anyway, I'm open for further discussions.

And, I think, you can also find interesting details about the global sensitivity analysis of simulation models following the recommendation of Saltelli et al. (e.g.: doi:10.1016/j.cpc.2009.09.018)

I doubt that R is enough fast for real size simulations. Especially if you would use your own coded loops.

Any suggestion of open software to run such simulations?
