A 120 kV TEM with a Lab6 filament is used here by about 20 Materials Science people to screen their nanoparticles before proceeding to a 300 kV analytical TEM. This 120 kV TEM is also used by Biologist for standard EPON sections of various biological samples. The TEM has an older CCD camera running from an XP computer. I want to upgrade (more pixels and new computer) and it has been suggested to me that a DDD camera is the way to go.
I have no experience with DDD cameras. I get it that they are more sensitive than CCD cameras and so are great for cryo-TEM; which we don't do here.
Is the extra expense of a DDD camera compared to a CCD camera worth it for such a TEM and these applications ?
Can a DDD camera be damaged by over-exposure to electrons like a CCD camera can (and has happened here) ?
