Dear Quan-Doan Mai thanks for the explanation. It's still not quite clear to me what your plans are. 4-Aminophenol itself is toxic and contains a phenyl ring. However, it has nothing to do with the parent benzene.

That's what I want to talk about. In the publications I have read, they only deal with the catalytic reduction of 4-NP to 4-AM, or if the photocatalytic property is used, the 4-NP decomposition to CO2 and H2O takes at least 4 hours. So, I ask myself, is there a better solution to this problem? If you can, please give a few suggestions, I appreciate that.

Can we perform both properties in the same material?

Catalytic Reduction 4-Nitrophenol to 4-Aminophenol is possible catalytically using H2/Pt. This compd. is an drug intermediate for paracetamol production , handled carefully.Amino group may get oxidized in the air.

Dear Quan-Doan Mai what Abbes Boukhari was suggesting was not "try it in HCl" but "try tin in HCl". Tin metal is an effective and commonly used reducing agent to transform aromatic nitro compounds to the corresponding aniline derivatives.

No it is not possible and it doesn't work either in aqueous or nonaqueous media, a catalyst is needed. If you need documents please tell me. My Regards

Dear Quan-Doan Mai as mentioned by Abdelkader BOUAZIZ the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol cannot be achieved by sodium borohydride alone. In any case you need to use a catalyst. I did a literature search on this and found that in most cases some kind of nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanocomposites etc. are employed. Cited below is just one article (Abdelkader BOUAZIZ promised you to provide more) in which easily prepared gold nanopareticles are used as catalst. The only drawback of this method is that you need expensive gold starting materials.

Aniline derivatives are synthesized by reducing nitroaromatics using the Béchamp process. The reaction consists of engaging the nitroaromatic with a large excess of iron in the presence of hydrochloric acid. At high temperature in the presence of a sub-stoichiometric amount of sodium chloride, instead of hydrochloric acid, the reaction leads to a quantitative yield of p-aminophenol. However, catalytic hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol is by far the most widely used. A wide variety of metals catalyze the hydrogenation of nitrobenzenes, both in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis such as: platinum, palladium, nickel, ruthenium or rhodium. Hydrogenation can lead directly to paracetamol using acetic acid as solvent and tungsten carbide as hydrogenation catalyst.

The non-catalytic reduction of ZININ has been reported to reduce the nitro functions to amines. It is carried out in the presence of sodium sulphide, polysulphides or hydrosulphides in a basic medium. Although its cost is higher than for Béchamp reduction, this reaction has a high functional tolerance. Moreover, substrates sensitive to acidic media do not degrade under these conditions. This method is applicable to practically all nitroarenes and the ease of this reaction depends mainly on the position on the aromatic ring of the various substituents.

LiAlH4 and NaBH4 are known to reduce organic functions in a non-selective manner. Used for the reduction of nitro, they generally lead to a mixture of amine/azo or amine/azo/azoxy compounds. In addition, the problem with double hydrides, apart from the treatment of the induced waste and its toxicity, concerns their use in large excess (H-per function). The reduction of nitroaromatics with NaBH4 in DMSO or in sulfolane initially leads to the formation of an azoxybenzene, which is then transformed into azobenzene. This finally gives the corresponding aniline. At the end of the reaction, however, the selectivity is not in favor of the amine since an amine/azo or amine/azo/azoxy mixture is generally observed. For this reason, NaBH4 is always associated with different metals in stoichiometric quantities for this transformation. Other metal complexes have been reported to reduce nitro functions to amines in catalytic amounts with NaBH4; e.g. Ni Raney, SnCl2, Cu(SO4)2, CuBr2, Ni(OAc)2, CoCl2/ exchange resin or Pd/C.

In principle the answers is yes, but as Doufnoune RACHIDA Rachida jut outlined, "the selectivity is not in favor of the amine since an amine/azo or amine/azo/azoxy mixture is generally observed". This means that with NaBH4 you will get product mixtures instead of pure 4-aminophenol. That's why sodium borohydride is normally employed in combination with a variety of catalyst in order to selectively form 4-AP.

Reduction 4-Nitrophenol to 4-Aminophenol using H2/Pt in AcOH is good eco-friendly method.However , laboratory method sodium sulfide reduction used most of the times.
