We found a significant influence of the DMFT over the success rate of restorations in high risk school children. In the literature we discovered only few information and all reported that there was no influence found. Is there any research on this topic going on?
Yes, we have analyzed the quality of posterior restorations (amalgam or resin) in a birth cohort and we could observe that individuals with higher level of caries prevalence at the age 15 had a higher chance of restoration failure at the age 24. Also, we observed that those individuals being always poor had a higher chance of restoration failures than those individuals that have never experienced poverty (Do socioeconomic determinants affect the quality of posterior dental restorations? Also, another study of our group demonstrated that patients with caries risk had a significantly lower survival rates of posterior composite restorations. If the patient had also a occlusal risk, together with caries risk, the increase in failure was even higher (Patient risk factors' influence on survival of posterior composites.

Thank you very much for this Information. I'm quite happy to see that our findings are confirmed in the literature. Did you find also influence over the failure-pattern? We found, that Major failures (as loss of restorations)were mor likely to appear in patients with high caries prevalence and minor faires (as marginal gaps) regardless of the DMFT.
Indeed Ina, we are just finishing an evaluation in primary teeth about the survival rate of posterior restorations in high caries kids and what we could see is that in those in the higher tertile of caries, the failures are more dramatic.
In fact, I think that we should make a rediscussion about the criteria to evaluate restorations and to define what is success and what is survival. In most of the cases when a restoration fail, it could be repair, and following the criteria available, this is an failure, but the restoration remains in function, thus it would not be classified as failure.
