Thanks for following. Barley is know here in the USA as a very strong killer of other plants, using natural herbicides called allelochemicals produced by the roots. There were two articles in the Journal of Chemical Ecology in 1993 by Dr. Liu and researchers, "Biologically active secondary metabolites of barley", parts 1 and 2, where he was the first to separate out an allelochemical effect and active components of a plant produced chemical that interferes with the growth of other plants.
If you post a list of the native grasses of your area, I could perhaps recommend a good candidate that would not interfere with your shrubs so much?
What is the possibility of you and I setting up at your Center a small scale experiment, like 1/10 hectare, to test my theory that by planting solid local native vegetation back on the land, you can change the climate and make it cooler and wetter, like what I am suggesting at http://www.ecoseeds.com/cool.html?
