I would recommend The New Public Health by Fran Baum, Public Health in Australia by Vivian Lin et al and Promoting Health: The Primary Health Care Approach by Talbot and Verrinder. All good for undergradaute students.
A very good modern and complete textbook is "Reinventing Public Health: Policies and Practices for a Healthy Nation. L. Aday, ed. Jossey- Bass, San Francisco, 2005
Park's Textbook of Preventive and Social Medicine by K Park, 22nd Edition, published by M/s Banarsidas Bhanot, Publishers, 1167, Prem Nagar, Jabalpur, 482001, MP, India Email: [email protected]
I have been involved in the production of a new text in this area which is has just been published through Cambridge University Press. It is called 'An introduction to community and primary health care', which you may find useful.
It is being marketed in the UK and Europe, and although most of the examples have an Australian context, the principles they illustrate are universal. The book is presented in three sections. The first section explains the theoretical concepts, so relevant globally. The second present skills for practice, such as how to work with groups, motivational interviewing, programme planning, needs assessment etc, so again globally relevant. The final section presents examples of practice, the focus is nursing practice, however the roles discussed are included to demonstrate how the principles discussed have been implemented, so exploring this within this context is relevant to any discipline or locale. I would suggest that asking the students to explore how the principles are enacted in local policy and service provision would be an excellent educational activity which would complement use of this text.
It is very difficult to get a comprehensive book on Public Health especially for developing countries. Most of the books written will focus on local problems and issues for developed countries. For people in the developing countries I find the Parks Text book recommended by Gumashta to be very useful. However for I prefer to use separate books for each topic like Epdiemiology. Biostatistics, Environmental health, Occupational health etc.
