My student is trying to design an engaging task for promoting modified interaction. The research concerns transcribing moments of learner-learner acquisition in progress, but we need a really good task. Some of past research such as that by Ellis, Tanaka and Yamazaki in Language Learning used apparently good tasks but the conditions left a lot to be desired.

Once again you have posed a very interesting question. Indubitably, as you have rightly observed, tasks provide ongoing situations whereby learners collaborate to solve specific problems . Such problem solving may hopefully lead to the acquisition of the targeted features. As you have mentioned, related scholars like Ellis have introduced a number of interactive tasks to materialize certain learning outcomes through interaction. However, I believe you would find quite a few suitable interactive tasks introduced by Mackey and Gass (2005). Tools like dictogloss, consensus tasks, etc. are only a few examples.

One way can be providing the learners with graded reading materials which have pre-reading and post-reading questions. Pre-reading tasks can help to activate their schemata. Then they are asked to read the text and then post-reading tasks can be discussed.
I think you might need to include some engaging and interactive tasks..If you read on Task-Based Language Learning (TBLL), you'll find many examples of those useful language tasks..The more the tasks are AUTHENTIC, engaging, contextual, goal-oriented and life-related, the more your students are likely to benefit from them..In this regard, you might need to have a look at a paper of mine (co-author) in which we dealt with AUTHENTIC language learning tasks in detail.
