Hope that you are doing good! I need some case histories, reports, papers, etc. that indicate the Backfill of a retaining wall has some cohesion values. Most manuals and design guides suggest using the coarse-grained material as Backfill which should not have cohesion. However, I would like to study both types (cohesive and cohesion-less) soil and find out their seismic performance. Could you please suggest me some articles which may help me in this regard? Already, I have collected some article from Google, FHWA, NCHRP, Department of Transportation, and other highway construction standards.

There are fill and other construction standards for retaining walls, generally to use coarse materials, properly compacted, to support drainage during and after severe rainfall events. Not my research expertise, per se, but if cohesive soils with low liquid limits would be used, the wall is under greater stress during rainfall as water is absorbed, and retained, and as well potentially more susceptable to seismic vibrations that can also liquify soils, especially those retaining water. It sounds like the research could be useful in assessing risk in selecting retaining wall backfill materials, especially in areas with more seismic potential. Most reputable engineering companies use retaining wall standards, but it is probably common that some retaining walls lack design and technical adherence to industry standards, and fail to recognize the low frequency risk associated with poor materials, extreme rainfall and seismic activity.
