One student asked me that it is possible to measure the depth of a body of water by throwing a stone in it and wait for the bubbles to surface. The time it takes after you saw the bubbles is equivalent to the depth of the body of water. I think I have to review my physics here. Anyone has to say about this?

I do not think that this method will work. Imagine the stone is carrying some gas below the water surface. The gas will immediately start to surface in bubble. So it can happen that the stone ceases to carry gas _before_ it hits the ground of the lake, say. Even taken for granted that the time you see the bubbles is related exactly to the depth from where they start to surface, this depth is not granted to be that of the body of water.
