If Google hadn't become the defacto search engine, something else would have. There were a number of options before Google, and there will likely be a number of options after it. There were also semi-alternatives like Gopher. Personally, there are some things that I like about Gopher that are still lacking in Google, although it's gotten much better. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gopher_(protocol)
During 1990s there was a balance between the following ways to access Web content:
1- Typing URL of Websites in a browser's address bar
2- Using Web directories e.g. Yahoo Directory
3- Following hyperlinks in web pages
4- Using search engines
Since around 2000, search engines especially Google have been changing our 'information seeking behavior' and now it is hard to imaging Web and internet without search tools especially Google. This paper might be useful in this regard:

I would say google can be a life savior. When I was preparing for my Master degree in my home country I had not any internet access. I had to go to the library and spend very long hours to find a specific paper related to my topic or find a good book. While now by using google just one click is enough to show hundreds of information that might be helpful to me.
In my opinion, if it were not for this technology concern like Google, then this technological, Internet gap of specific remote information services would be quickly filled by other companies. Technological internet companies are creating new standards and technological solutions for the provision of specific internet services and information tools. On the other hand, the offers of technological internet companies are a derivative of citizens' demand for certain information services accessible via the Internet.
