How about the curse of dimensionality? Has this huge problem been solved? I do not want to make an incorrect assessment of ANNs but it seems that ANNs live among the academicians only. Please falsify me by giving concrete and specific examples used in industry or in daily life, if possible. Thanks in advance.
You are right that is why ANN is called black box because the process solving a problem and the progress of obtaining a solution is hidden from the user. Normally, ANN is created based on the problem at hand (number of inputs, number of hidden layers and the expected output). There are many commercial applications that uses ANN to solve complex problems e.g. image classification in ENVI see http://www.exelisvis.com/
Another example is using ANN is NeuralTools for Microsoft Excel which is a sophisticated data mining application that uses neural networks. You can make accurate new predictions based on the patterns in your known data.
There are many applications in Medicine, Engineering...etc.

Well, the french mail agency was using a neural network for doing OCR on the adresses on enveloppes.
Another application is in google street view for blurring car licence numbers and people faces.
Facebook is also using a deep neural net for the face recognition if I'm not mistaking.
If you consider Self Organizing Map into ANN then it has a lot of applications in data representation both in medical and economical domains.
One branch of neural network that it might be worth looking into is reservoir computing. There are a few handy toolboxes for this for MATLAB and Python available online and from what I've seen in the literature and my own experience, Echo State Networks don't suffer from the curse of dimensionality.
It is enough to take a look at your "Adobe Acrobat Reader" where you can easily change a photo to a text using OCR. Another common application of ANN is in driver assistant system and more specifically in drowsiness detection systems. So, ANNs are more than just a pure theory.
