I hope you already have network animater and xgraph for visual plotting , both of them are required to visually simulate the wireless topology , else you could have simple trace file and no patch required.

you need to modify mac-802.11.cc and its header file such that its data rate is distance dependent and having multiple data rates.

The current default ns2 distribution has 802.11b implemented. I think simply changing the MAC parameters for 802.11 in ns2 wouldn't make it behave like 802.11a/g or /n.

All 802.11 flavors have same MAC DCF procedure except .11n which uses aggregation. The difference comes from the PHY, therefore, PHY parameters shall be changed in ns2 to make it work like .11a/g/n. For example, frequency, propagation, system loss etc. etc.

I am also looking for .11a/g PHY implementation in ns2. Does anyone know if someone has implemented it?

You should uses NS3, it supports b/g/e/n/a (n only siso)

To adapt 11n to ns2 can be really complex, 11e, aggregate frames, block ack, error models …

An alternative can be Omnet 11e and 11n SISO error models are included, but aggregate and block ack are not included yet
