this is very normal, whether the reactants are solids or liquids. But the problem of rapid gel formation and possible degradation (low thermal conduction of the medium) of the product are quite common. Also if there is any by-product (e.g., water) that causes the reversibility of the reaction may causes an additional problem, since no possibility to apply an azeotropic distillation, but alternative routes are possible to avoid this situation.
Besides what is mentionned in the two previous answers, microwaves are also applied with an enhanced efficiency. Regards
