FTIR is a powerful technique to analyze bonding of ions in prepared samples. In other hand, you also able to investigate the cation-anion interactions in your samples by investigate the vibration peaks appear in FTIR spectra. For more information, I suggest you to read the books of spectroscopy entitle of "Fundamental of FTIR Spectroscopy" by Brian C. Smith (2011); and "Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy: Principles and Spectral Interpretation" by Peter Larkin (2011).
