We can make an attenuator act as an amplifier by connecting it in the negative feedback of an op-amp...

... so the whole combination of the attenuator and the op-amp begins acting as an amplifier.

But an even greater challenge is to turn a single amplifier with a voltage gain < 1 (i.e., attenuator) into an amplifier with a gain >>> 1 (the attached picture below). Is it possible?

Intuitive explanations are welcome...
