One of my manuscripts has come for revision. Meanwhile my collaborators gave us new data. Alongside the revisions suggested by the reviewers I wish to include the new data and and the authors. But I am afraid if the editor and the reviewers would object to this. Any comments or suggestions? Also, is it a good idea to contact the editor to seek his opinion before the actual submission? With a good motivation i don't see a problem, it's good for your paper, so it's goof for the journal and hence it is good for you.
It does not hurt to ask the question, you can only get a yes or a no. That does not harm. I bet it will be a yes. Just go for it.

The way we improve our papers is from feedback and new leads from (new) co-authors, referees. This is research business as usual. (Just hope that the data from the new sources does not overturn your previous findings! Then you will have to rationalize, and resubmit, delaying things.)
Oh, yes, and remember to subject your additional text to the same scrutiny that the reviewers did for your first text...
I would strongly encourage to also view it from the scientific side: Does the new data and authors make an important difference - if yes, I do not think an editor would object.
Of course, if someone just keeps on filling his paper up with new data and new authors, there is a point where one might ask, if the reviewing process should just be finished quickly for this paper and the new material included in a follow-up paper.

Yes, if the principle author gets some new data on his topic at a later stage which will enhance the quality of manuscript, it should be added to the paper. Recently, I did the same in one of my article and its my pleasure to inform that the editor of the journal permitted me to go ahead.
