The work on faults and failures in a power transformer, which is of significance in understanding results from the Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) and condition assessment measurements? This technical case study paper discusses the advantages of online DGA. The first study describes the various reasons behind the failure of power transformers with examples. The review will also be useful for effective prevention of power transformer failures, with comparative analysis. Then the paper presents how the developing failures could be saved through a continual Transformer Asset Health Review by effective DGA analysis combined with effective condition assessment. Furthermore, the study reveals the need for computations of core (Ro and Xo) and winding equivalent parameters (Ro2 and Xo2). It also proposes an equation reduction technique in the procedure of open circuit and short circuit tests of transformers, which are useful in computing winding and core parameters, respectively.
