Can we convert or make theory class also as interactive as practical or lab session by using the follwoing techniques:
1. Teach using some simple equivalent model
2. Overlaping/sandwitch way of learning: Teach and practice and teach practice use simulation tool such as MATLAB, PSIM etc
3. Instead of calculator MATLAB can be used as tool to solve the problem, it save paper also.
I would like first to ask what is the necessity of making "theory classes as interactive as labs". Because, if there is such a need, we can just implement them as labs. Maybe, you mean the lack of the sufficient technical equipment to do that?
Agreed with 1, 2 and 3. The issue you have raised here is about th method of learning, It is only natural that students will want to practice what they are taught, and in many cases, they understand what they are taught by practising it. Hence most students prefer a practical lab as opposed to theory classes. I believe there is a lot of scope in developing different teaching techniques to aid learning and moving away from the traditional classroom based methods.
Leaning means in theory class the student have to only hear. In lab they will do somthing. Alwaying doing and practicing made us to remember along period. Whichever the mode of ganinging knowledge, if that method made us to uderstand and iteresting or developing some curiosity then we will also follow. I enjoyed teaching by carrying some parts of electrical machnines, pieces of battery and electronic devices like transister, diodes,small dymano, etc.
In my point of view theory classes are important as well. As students can learn theory first then they can implement in Lab classes properly. However in Lab sessions students are relax not bound for eye contact with teacher or white board, this also become reason to enjoy Lab class more.
Noor Zaman told simple & interesting point to be noted. In relaxed condition the chances of more ' little discussion format' is allowed, which may help student to gain more knowledege at his comfort.
Lab related indutrial visit also help students to motivate more and some students also can contribute some study charts, these can be simply hang on the wall space usually avaibale in th elab.
Example of Few Charts: Insulating mateials, Different types of cable [short circuited and good condition], Exploted pyhsical view of computer[alos can be hanged in computer lab], exploted view of small machine. NOt cenessary new one.
