i read before that the trends of calc alaklic and tholeiitic magmas are similar for basalts and can't be differentiated except for more fractionated rocks like andesites and dacites . 

but,now i see in an article this statement ( The host rock here is a metamorphosed tholeiitic basalt dating to ~2.85 billion years ) 

so how did he know that this basalt was of tholeiitic not calc alkalic .
