Advancement of information and communication technology (ICT) made implementation of virtual classroom possible. The advantage of this approach is that a good teacher can simultaneously be made visible to many geographically distributed student communities. Can we consider this to be one of the variants of e-learning?
Virtual classroom is an interesting new domain of educational technology. It lays many interdiciplinary subject if you want to put teacher on how they teach inside the class it most likely to go to expert system domain. If it goes as far as real classes where user login and go inside it as its a reall class with students around the world it goes to massive online courses or MOOC.
Maybe you suppose to specified which area that your virtual classroom will be.
Virtual class room is important and helpful, but it cannot substitute the learning outcomes directly from a teacher.

But my intention for asking this question is to find out whether this concept can combat, at lest to some extent, the nonavailability of adequate number of teachers.

One of the benefits of the advancement of technology is that it enables us to instant communications, live and otherwise including virtual instructions. Virtual instruction is one of the favorites and widely promoted instructional methods to disiminate knowlegde and classroom lessons to adult professionals who juggle beteween work, learing and family at the moment and to the forseable future. Although it was originally designed to creat conferences, debates among scientists, professionals, business people and co-equals without being in one room at the same time.
As James and all you have pointed out, it may have some side effects - from the traditional classroom, bidirectional teaching format of a personal touch to a mostly unidirectional. I can say, it is somewhere between learning by reading text books from home or from libraries and the traditional classroom method.
However, for fields or skiills of few experts, the virtual setting is effective to run a course or training by one person to several places in a country or globally. A mathematician or a physicist can deliver a result of a theory to graduate students of several universities of a country or accrose the globe by being in one place, as long as the classrooms are electronically connected, or a person of a particular technical skill can deliver his/her instructions of training the same way - that is one of the huge benefits to see.
