The first CARE results indicate that the oxidative potential of particulate matter increases with decreasing particle size (in the ultrafine particle size range), but only for a certain particle composition (and/or source). This highlights that the combination of particle size and composition may play a bigger role in the generation of particulate matter toxicity - at least, for UFPs. There are harmonized, robust, accurate standards of UFP size distribution measurements ( Wiedensohler et al., 2012). Can we measure the chemical composition of UFPs with the same accuracy?
