i am running what i believe to be a RCT which is titled "the effect of a 6 week pedometer based walking intervention on mental health and well-being". I will have a control group who will do their best to stick to their average step count for 4 weeks and an intervention group that will aim to increase upon average steps by 15%. The first 2 weeks of study will be used to calculate an average weekly step count for each participant while they go about their normal routine. Each participant will complete a mental well-being questionnaire at the end of each week (nominal data). I'm looking for the relationship between steps taken and mental well-being levels.

first off am i correct in saying that the steps taken are the independent variable and the questionnaire results are the dependent variable? also am i correct in saying that to compare data bewteen the two different groups i would use an independent t-test? and if i wanted to analyse within group like before and after in each group that would be a paired t-test? would you recommend i run both and which is most important? any input or recommendations welcome.

many thanks
