You could use active ester methodology, but need to protect the thio-group first.

Buy methyl (or ethyl) thioglycolate (it's not expensive) and use standard conditions EDCI/DMAP. It should work. Then, perform the cleavage of the ester with LiOH in a mixture of THF/H2O.
