I guess you could use something like Fuzzy Self-orginizing maps (FSOMs). I didn't really hae to do with a set of patterns, but I have an article "An Evolving Cascade Neuro-Fuzzy System for Data Stream Fuzzy Clustering". You can take a look at it. I hope that it might be useful for you somehow.
