I'm looking to use a self-report measure of sleep in further cross-sectional/longitudinal research on lifestyle behaviours and mental health. Any sleep measures that are easy to administer, relatively short to answer, and quantitatively sound.
Schredl, M., Berres, S., Klingauf, A., Schellhaas, S., & Göritz, A. S. (2014). The Mannheim Dream Questionnaire (MADRE): Retest reliability, age and gender effects. International Journal of Dream Research, 7, 141–147.
Schredl, M. (2004). Reliability and stability of a Dream Recall Frequency Scale. Perceptual and Motor Skills, 98, 1422–1426.
Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index is what I always use. Will give you a general overview of how poor the participant’s sleep is, and individual questions will examine things like sleep duration, sleep onset latency etc
Would suggest PSQI as above (Buysse et al,1898, Psychiatry Research) - self-administered and has dimensions that can be explored as factors or single dimensions. Insomnia Severity Index (Bastien et al, 2001, Sleep Medicine) contains questions about impact on daytime functioning so may be worth looking at.
It definitely depends on what sleep variables you are interested in measuring. If you are looking for insomnia measurement, i highly recommend the insomnia severity index.
