you will have to distinguish between demand response (DR) and demand side management (DSM). DR comprizes all methods that give incentives (or signals) to the consumers so as consumers may react (or may not) with altering demand. whereas DSM comprizes methods that directly control the devices within the smart grid. For both approaches meanwhile lots of methods have been proposed. Maybe you can be a bit more specific about what apporach you are interested in.
